Miranda Sofroniou

Miranda Sofroniou

Who is Miranda Sofroniou? Where are you from? Where do you live now?

I am an illustrator originally from the UK and currently based in Melbourne, Australia. In November 2017 I decided to move across the world, and focus on building my freelance career. This has enabled me to spend more time doing what I love and to be surrounded by inspiration, nature and sunshine.

How did you become the woman you are today?

I guess with time! The past few years have been a huge learning experience; working as a designer in-house for a British stationery and Gift brand to making the step into freelancing fulltime. Over the past year, I have really focused on developing my illustrative style and finding out what works, working out what I want from life, and living in the present and following my dreams.

What is the message you're sending into the universe with your work? Why do you feel so strongly about said message?

My illustrations are inspired by nature, travel people and animals; I aim to evoke a sense of exploration and wonder through my illustrations, creating a whimsical, narrative world that invites the viewer inside.

Tell us a little bit about what drew you to your medium. Did you choose to work with said medium or did it choose you?

My illustrations are all hand painted. Mixing painterly strokes with fine detail to create playful images celebrating color and pattern. I have always loved painting and drawing, and it feels completely natural for me to work in quite an organic way, using the medium which feels right for the piece.

I love that you turn your illustrations into prints, how does this play into your role as an Artist? What do you love/hate about this process?

It’s something fairly new I’ve been doing, so it’s a case of figuring out what works and what doesn’t. It is always such a joy to receive an order and know that people all over the world will have my prints on their walls.

What is the single most important tip or trick you can share to making it as a successful female artist?

Believe in yourself and enjoy what you do.

How do you stay motivated? What does your daily routine look like?

I like to have lots of projects on the go at the same time, so if something isn’t going so well I can focus on the other project and then with a little time and space when I come back to the work I will see it with fresh eyes. My daily routine is fairly flexible but always starts with an espresso!

Give us three of your favorite/ most inspiring things right now. Could be a book, a food, a destination, a song, a person, etc.

I’ve just come back from a weekend away in the Grampian Mountains (about 3 hours from Melbourne) and the weather was perfect, spring flowers and animals everywhere and some incredible hikes – for me this is the perfect way to ‘recharge’ and to feel inspired.

What's the best advice you've ever been given?

As before - Believe in yourself!
